The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 23rd the results of the '2024 Electronic Document Industry Survey,' which analyzed the current status of the domestic electronic document industry. According to the survey, the revenue of domestic electronic document enterprises in 2023 was 13.8 trillion won, an increase of 31.44% compared to the previous year.

Revenue in the electronic document industry increased evenly across the entire life-cycle industry, including the electronic document production sector (4.2 trillion won), management sector (5.4 trillion won), and distribution sector (4 trillion won).

In particular, the expansion of mobile electronic billing in accordance with the plan for a paperless administration under the digital platform government and the spread of new services such as electronic receipts in the private sector were analyzed as major growth factors. The proportion of demand in the public sector increased from 18.7% the previous year to 21.6%, while demand also expanded in the information and communication industry (19.5%), retail sector (13.9%), and financial sector (5.2%).

The number of electronic document enterprises increased by 147 to 2,900 compared to the previous year, and the workforce grew by 25.08% to 68,781. By sector, the distribution of personnel was as follows: software development (38,289), maintenance and operations (11,492), and marketing, sales, and customer management (6,580).

Research and development expenses amounted to 1.17 trillion won, an increase of 377.2 billion won from the previous year, accounting for 8.47% of revenue, with 9.2% of enterprises either pursuing or planning overseas expansion in North America, Southeast Asia, and Japan.

KISA assessed that the electronic document industry shows a virtuous cycle in terms of revenue growth, workforce, number of enterprises, investment, and overseas expansion through this survey.
