The story of a bomb detection dog named 'Samson', who saved 36 soldiers in Colombia and lost one leg, is gaining attention. He is referred to as a 'hero dog' locally.
According to the official social media (SNS) of the Colombian Army on the 16th, the shepherd dog Samson discovered a landmine installed along a walking path during a military operation in the rural area of Yondó, Antioquia around 10 a.m. local time on the 10th. This landmine was reportedly placed by the Colombian guerrilla group ELN. It was a situation that could have endangered not only soldiers but also civilians.
After detecting the landmine, Samson activated it, causing it to detonate. In the process, he was severely injured on one leg. At the time, Samson crawled towards his handler, Carlos Beleno, dragging his body. He was taken to the hospital for surgery and saved his life, but had to have one leg amputated.
The Colombian military referred to Samson as 'our four-legged hero' and said, 'He may no longer be able to serve in active duty, but Samson's bravery and spirit of sacrifice will forever remain in the memories of all the soldiers he protected.'
This landmine explosion incident occurred just a few days after a bomb attached to a donkey exploded in the same area, resulting in the death of one soldier and injuring two others. At that time, the ELN was also identified as being behind the attack.
