A prisoner escaped by hiding in the bag of a fellow inmate who was released from prison in France. Authorities are currently pursuing the escaped fugitive.
According to reports from France's Le Parisien and AFP on the 13th (local time), on the 11th, a prisoner named Eliazid, 20, hid in a large bag of a fellow inmate as he was released from the Corbeil prison near Lyon. The fellow inmate used a cart to transport the bag. After passing through the check-in window, he picked up the bag again and left the prison without any further inspection.
A source related to the case noted, "Considering that the weight of the bag was at least 50 to 60 kg, it's hard to believe that the fellow inmate was unaware of it," casting doubt on whether he assisted Eliazid's escape.
Correctional authorities have launched an internal investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident. Sébastien Cowel, the head of the correctional service, expressed regret, stating, "Various mistakes by the correctional authorities have accumulated, and this incident represents an unprecedented and very rare occurrence in our correctional administration that clearly reveals a series of serious dysfunctions."
The Lyon prosecution office is also reportedly conducting its own investigation.
