On the 8th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the tariff imposition date set in the 'tariff letter' sent to 14 countries, including Korea and Japan, the previous day, will not allow for an extension.
In a post on his owned social media platform, Truth Social, Trump noted, 'According to the letter sent to several countries yesterday, the tariffs will begin to be imposed starting from Aug. 1, 2025, in letters sent today and tomorrow,' adding, 'This date has not changed and will not change going forward.'
This contrasts with his earlier statement that the tariff imposition deadline could be adjusted based on the results of negotiations the previous day. During a dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on the 7th (local time), when asked by reporters if Aug. 1 is a firm deadline, Trump replied, 'It is firm, but I won't say it's 100% firm,' adding, 'We are open to it.'
When asked, 'Is the letter sent today the final proposal from the U.S.?' Trump responded, 'I would say it is final, but if the other side contacts me with another proposal that I like, we would do that (adjust it).'
