On the 26th (local time), Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, announced this new visa restriction policy, stating, "The fentanyl crisis in America is unprecedented."

Minister Rubio said, "Today’s action expands the existing measures that have revoked visa eligibility for drug traffickers. Imposing visa restrictions on drug traffickers, their family members, and close personal and business associates will not only prevent them from entering the U.S. but will also have a lasting deterrent effect on ongoing illegal activities."

He added, "The Department of State will take all necessary measures to prevent and stop fentanyl and other illegal drugs from entering the United States and harming Americans." The department emphasized that decisions regarding the issuance of U.S. visas to foreigners are made with consideration for national security.
