On the 25th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption charges, to grant him a "get out of jail free card." It is unprecedented for a leader of one country to speak out about the trial of another nation's judiciary.
In a post on social media platform Truth Social that day, Trump said, "I learned that 'Bibi' (Netanyahu's nickname) has been summoned to appear in court this Monday," adding, "Bibi Netanyahu's trial should be dismissed immediately, and this great hero should receive a pardon."
He continued, "Despite Israel facing its greatest moment, the nonsensical witch hunt against 'wartime Prime Minister' Netanyahu continues," and "There has never been a figure in Israel's history who has fought as competently and powerfully as he has."
Trump praised Netanyahu, calling him "an unprecedented warrior in Israeli history" and stated, "It was the U.S. that saved Israel in the Iranian nuclear crisis, and now the country that will save Bibi Netanyahu will be the U.S."
Netanyahu is on trial for charges of fraud, breach of trust, and bribery filed in 2019. He is accused of receiving expensive gifts worth around $200,000 from billionaires and providing them with political and policy favors.
