The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will convene an emergency meeting on the afternoon of the 22nd (local time) to discuss the heightened tensions in the Middle East triggered by the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
According to the UN, this meeting is being held at the request of the Iranian government and is expected to take place in an official meeting format at 3 p.m. at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The meeting is likely to address the recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Earlier, Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian foreign minister, strongly condemned the U.S. actions, stating that "the attack by the United States, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, on its own peaceful nuclear facilities is a serious violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT)."
António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, also expressed serious concerns after the news of the U.S. airstrikes, describing it as "a dangerous escalation in a region pushed to the brink, posing a direct threat to international peace and security" and noted his serious concerns about the U.S. use of force against Iran.
