In an interview with Italy's state broadcaster Rai TG1 channel on the 19th (local time), the pope said, "The current global situation is very concerning," and noted, "I am watching the events occurring around the world day and night."

In particular, mentioning the intensifying international conflicts centered on the Middle East, he emphasized, "This issue is not limited to a specific region," and reiterated his appeal for peace, stating, "No matter the cost, let us avoid the use of force and seek a solution through diplomacy and dialogue."

He added, "Even at this moment, countless innocent lives are being lost," and asserted, "We must always promote peace."

The interview took place right after the pope unexpectedly visited the Vatican Radio Center located in Santa Maria Galeria, northwest of Rome. Leo XIII was elected as the new pope on the 8th of last month, following the death of Pope Francis in April. This interview marks his official first media statement.
