Amid a verbal dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk, a U.S. politician suggested that Musk establish a new political party.
According to Politico on the 7th (local time), Taiwanese-American politician Andrew Yang stated in an interview that he contacted Musk to propose the establishment of a new party or collaboration with his own Forward Party.
Yang noted that he has not yet received a response from Musk, but said, "We have believed for years that the U.S. needs a new party, so waiting another 24 hours is nothing."
Yang remarked, "The fastest-growing political force in the U.S. right now is independent," adding, "They feel neither the Democratic nor Republican parties represent them, and they believe the two-party system provides nothing they desire."
Previously, Musk also conducted an online survey through X, the social media platform he owns, asking, "Is it time to create a new party that actually represents the 80% in the middle in America?" The survey results showed that 80% of respondents supported the establishment of a new party.
However, it is realistically difficult for a third party to establish itself in a situation where the two-party system of the Republicans and Democrats is solidified. Yang founded the Forward Party with former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman, who left the Democratic Party after losing in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries and the 2021 Democratic New York City mayoral primary, but did not achieve significant results in the elections.
