U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Ukraine war and sanctions against Iran during a phone call.
On the 4th (local time), President Trump revealed on his social media platform Truth Social that he spoke with President Putin for 1 hour and 15 minutes, noting, "We talked about Russia's airstrikes against Ukraine and various attacks ongoing by both sides."
President Trump said, "It was a good conversation, but it wasn’t one that will lead to immediate peace," adding, "President Putin strongly noted that he must respond to Ukraine's recent attacks on air bases."
This implies that President Putin indicated potential retaliation for Ukraine's recent drone attacks that destroyed dozens of Russian aircraft.
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Kremlin, confirmed during a briefing that the two leaders discussed the topic of attacks on military airfields at considerable length, stating, "President Trump emphasized to President Putin that the U.S. had not received prior information about attack plans from Ukraine."
Additionally, Ushakov said President Putin provided detailed explanations to President Trump regarding the second negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing that this round of talks was overall productive.
The phone call also reportedly discussed Russia's participation in the Iran nuclear negotiations.
President Trump stated to President Putin that Iran must not have nuclear weapons and noted, "I believe we are on the same page."
He further remarked, "Iran has been slow to act on this very important issue (the nuclear issue)," and stated, "I will demand that they provide a definite answer shortly."
Aide Ushakov noted that if Russia participates in the process of resolving the issues with Iran, President Trump would appreciate it.
The U.S. and Iran are currently negotiating over the cessation of uranium enrichment linked to nuclear weapon development and the lifting of sanctions.
Aide Ushakov summarized that the fourth phone call between the two leaders since Trump’s second term began was positive and productive.
