U.S. President Donald Trump pressured the judiciary, stating that the enforcement of reciprocal tariffs will soon mean the destruction of the U.S. economy.
On the 1st (local time), President Trump wrote on social media platform Truth Social, "If the court issues a ruling against our tariffs contrary to expectations, it will allow other countries to take our country hostage with 'anti-American tariffs.' This will mean the economic destruction of the United States."
Earlier, the U.S. Court of International Trade (USCIT) ordered the withdrawal of the reciprocal tariffs imposed by President Trump based on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), stating that the authority to levy tariffs lies with Congress. However, the Trump administration immediately appealed, and the appeals court has decided to stay the USCIT ruling. The final decision is expected to be made by the Supreme Court, which currently has a conservative majority of 6 to 3.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated in an interview with Fox News that "tariffs will not disappear," asserting that President Trump will utilize the authority to impose tariffs to maintain them. He also mentioned that U.S. trading partners are engaging in tariff and trade negotiations with the United States.
