U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on the 30th that China violated the trade agreement made with the United States to significantly reduce tariffs.
On the same day, Trump wrote in a post on social media platform Truth Social, "The bad news is that China fully violated the agreement with us," adding, "The role of Mr. Nice Guy ends here."
The two countries agreed during talks in Geneva on the 10th to 11th to lower tariffs by 115 percentage points over a 90-day period. However, there has been no notable progress in subsequent negotiations. Trump did not specify what aspect of the agreement China violated.
Trump's recent remarks are interpreted as pressure on China, which has shown a lukewarm attitude toward serious trade negotiations. He also expressed displeasure with the recent term "Trump Always Chickens Out," which emerged regarding the U.S.-China tariff reduction agreement, referring to it as "Taco Trade."
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who participated in the U.S.-China talks, noted in an interview with Fox News the day before that discussions with China are "somewhat stagnant," but added, "I believe additional negotiations will take place in the next few weeks and that a phone call between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may occur at some point."
