In Norway, a watch officer fell asleep, causing a container ship to crash into the yard of a dwelling.
According to U.S. CNN and Norwegian state broadcaster NRK on the 25th, on the morning of the 22nd at around 5 a.m. (local time), Jostein Jergensen, who lives in a dwelling in the Byneset area of Trondheim, was suddenly awakened by a loud engine sound.
Since the house was by the sea, it was common to hear boat sounds from outside, but that day, the noise was unusually loud. Jergensen said, "When I looked out the window, the ship was heading straight for the land," adding, "It was moving fast, and there was no sign of it changing course."
He went outside and tried to alert the ship to the danger by shouting. However, there was no response from the ship. Jergensen noted, "It felt unreal. I never thought something like this would happen."
Around the same time, homeowner Johan Helberg was awakened by the loud doorbell ringing from a neighbor. Hearing the neighbor say, "Did you not see the ship?" he looked outside and saw the bow of a huge vessel coming in through the window. When he rushed outside, he found the container ship slightly parked in his front yard.
If the point where the ship came ashore had been just 5 meters to the right, it would have collided with the house itself. The accident disrupted the hot water supply to the house, and heating was not functioning. However, there was no other significant property damage. Helberg remarked, "Rather than being scared, it was funny."
The ship that crashed into Helberg's front yard is the 11,000-ton container ship 'NCL Salten,' which is 135 meters long. According to local police and the Coast Guard, the ship was navigating at about 16 knots (approximately 30 km/h) when it collided with the land at around 5:32 a.m. At the time, a 30-year-old Ukrainian second officer was alone on watch duty and had fallen asleep.
