Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla, unveiled the latest footage of the humanoid robot "Optimus" that Tesla is developing. In the video, Optimus naturally performs household chores.
The video, which Tesla and Musk shared on the 21st (local time) on X (formerly Twitter), shows Optimus opening a trash can lid to dispose of a trash bag, sweeping the floor with a broom, or vacuuming.
Additionally, Optimus lifted a spatula to stir a pot on the gas stove, applied pressure with its fingers to tear kitchen towels, pressed the microwave's buttons, pulled open cabinet handles, and naturally performed the motion of drawing the curtains.
At the bottom of the video, a caption explained, "All these tasks were performed by a single neural network and were learned directly through videos showing human actions."
Musk added the phrase "The biggest product ever" to the video.
According to the online media TeslaRati, Milun Kobak, the Vice President responsible for Optimus at Tesla, explained in an additional post on X that day, "One of our goals is for Optimus to learn directly from internet videos depicting how humans perform tasks," adding that "these videos are often shot from a third-person perspective with random cameras."
"Recently, we have made significant progress in this process, and we can now directly transfer the learning from human videos (currently in first-person perspective) to the robot," he added. "This allows for much faster acquisition of new tasks compared to using only teleoperated robot data."
This means that Optimus can currently learn to mimic human actions from videos inputted in a first-person perspective, and it suggests that soon, it will be able to learn and follow just by watching random videos available online. This would significantly increase the number of tasks Optimus can learn and perform in a short time.
