U.S. President Donald Trump noted that he would decide whether to strengthen sanctions against Russia based on its attitude regarding the Ukraine war. He emphasized that the decision on sanctions is based on his judgment and is not a matter for others to decide.
President Trump stated during a Q&A session with reporters immediately following an event about the missile defense system 'Iron Dome' at the White House on the 20th (local time) that "(Strengthening sanctions against Russia) is something I will decide after observing how Russia acts."
He further emphasized, "That is not someone else's decision," highlighting that he is the one making the decision on sanctions against Russia.
Earlier, President Trump was evaluated to have spoken for over two hours the previous day with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but it is assessed that he was unable to extract specific concessions regarding a ceasefire and peace in the Ukraine war.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger sanctions during a press conference in Kyiv on the 19th, asserting that "if Russia is not ready to stop its acts of violence, stronger sanctions are necessary," while urging the international community to increase pressure.
Meanwhile, regarding reports that Russia is building up military strength near the Finnish border, President Trump said, "I am not worried at all," adding, "Finland and Norway will be very safe."
This refers to a report by The New York Times (NYT) on the 19th, which cited satellite image analysis indicating that Russia is currently enhancing military bases and continuously expanding military infrastructure near the Finnish border.
