U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the 19th (local time). The White House explained that Trump would urge a swift end to the war in Ukraine before the currency.

The Associated Press reported that the conversation between the two leaders began after 10:30 a.m. The White House confirmed this around 11 a.m. This is the third conversation between the U.S. and Russian leaders since Trump took office again.

White House Spokesperson Caroline Levitt noted in a briefing before the currency that "Trump has clearly stated that he hopes for a peaceful resolution and ceasefire as soon as possible for both Ukraine and Russia," adding, "The president has made it clear that his goal is to see a ceasefire and an end to this conflict. He is fatigued and frustrated with both sides of the conflict."

In response to a question about whether Trump still wishes to meet with President Putin directly, he replied, "I certainly think he will be open to that." When asked about whether a second round of sanctions against Russia is under consideration, he said, "Everything is on the table," adding, "This is an issue the president has reviewed and discussed."

The second round of sanctions is intended to target other countries purchasing Russian energy and has been discussed as a measure to pressure Russia when it does not cooperate with U.S.-led peace talks for Ukraine.

Spokesperson Levitt stated that Vice President J.D. Vance delivered a letter inviting the Pope to the White House during a meeting with Pope Leo XIV held at the Vatican on that day. Additionally, regarding the recent downgrade of the U.S. national credit rating by the international credit rating agency Moody's, she noted, "The world trusts the U.S. and our economy," adding, "The president disagrees with Moody's assessment."
