Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the 19th (local time) that he plans to propose a memorandum regarding a peace agreement with former U.S. President Donald Trump immediately after a phone call.
During a press conference with TASS and RIA Novosti, President Putin evaluated, "I spoke with President Trump for over 2 hours," saying, "It was a very beneficial, honest conversation, and overall a very meaningful currency."
He explained, "After discussions with President Trump, Russia decided to propose a memorandum for a future peace agreement with Ukraine," adding that "this memorandum may include the possibility of a ceasefire over a certain period, principles for resolving the crisis, and a timeline for the peace agreement."
This position comes after Russia and Ukraine resumed direct negotiations in Istanbul, Turkey, after three years, yet there were no substantial results. Ukraine demands a 30-day ceasefire, but Russia is not accepting this.
President Putin emphasized, "If a proper agreement is reached, a ceasefire is possible," stating, "The very fact that direct talks have begun is proof that we are moving in the right direction."
He also expressed gratitude for President Trump's positive stance on a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities, adding, "President Trump supported a peaceful resolution, and now we only need to find an effective method."
President Putin said, "Both Russia and Ukraine must show a strong desire for peace, and it is important to find a compromise that suits both sides," noting, "Russia's position is to resolve the root causes of the crisis."
This phone call marks the third direct currency between President Putin and former President Trump this year. Yuri Ushakov, an aide at the Kremlin, reported that the call lasted a total of 2 hours and 5 minutes, noting it was conducted in a "frank, constructive atmosphere of mutual respect."
The two leaders discussed issues related to normalizing relations between their countries during this call and agreed to continue dialogue on various current issues, including the Ukraine matter. However, Ushakov stated that there were no discussions on specific ceasefire deadlines.
Ushakov reported, "President Trump said, 'Vladimir, call me anytime. I would be happy to talk,'" adding that President Putin also congratulated President Trump on the birth of his grandson. He mentioned that the possibility of a direct meeting between the two leaders is also open.
During the currency, President Trump reportedly emphasized once again that the U.S. and Russia should establish a relationship based on mutual respect and reciprocity, considering Russia's global role and economic stature.
Former President Trump also expressed that he is "not a supporter of sanctions, but a supporter of agreements" regarding the anti-Russia sanctions bill currently being pursued in the U.S. Congress, Ushakov stated.
During the call, the issue of prisoner exchanges was also discussed, and it is reported that both countries are working on plans for an exchange of 9 citizens each. Additionally, President Putin positively assessed the U.S.-Iran talks mediated by Oman related to the Iranian nuclear program.
