The 78th Cannes International Film Festival (hereafter referred to as the Cannes Film Festival) organizers announced a 'dress code' prohibiting excessive exposure in outfits at red carpet events a day before the festival's opening. This year, it is expected that it will be difficult to see actresses in outrageous nude and voluminous outfits.
According to CNN and other sources on the 13th, the Cannes Film Festival organizers stated on their official website, "To maintain dignity, nudity is prohibited not only on the red carpet but in all areas of the festival grounds," adding, "Those who do not comply with this rule will be barred from accessing the red carpet."
The announcement was in response to a question about whether there is a dress code in the FAQs section of the official website. This is the first time the festival has officially stipulated a prohibition on excessively revealing outfits.
According to the festival, to maintain the dignity of the event, participants cannot wear nude outfits in any event space at the festival, including the red carpet. Additionally, voluminous outfits that obstruct audience movement and excessively long dress hems that complicate seating arrangements in theaters are also not permitted.
Being one of the top three film festivals in the world (Cannes, Berlin, Venice), the Cannes Film Festival is known for its strict dress code policies. Specifically, for evening screenings at the Lumière Grand Theatre, invited directors and actors, as well as all audience members, must wear long dresses, tuxedos, little black dresses, or dark suits to gain entry. Footwear must also consist of either heeled or flat shoes and sandals. Large bags like backpacks are not allowed, while all other screening venues, excluding the evening screenings at the Grand Theatre, only require a neat attire for entry.
Regarding the recent measures taken by the Cannes Film Festival organizers, CNN analyzed that it seems to have been directly influenced by the trend of 'nude' dresses emerging recently at various film festivals and other events.
In fact, at recent high-profile overseas award ceremonies like the Met Gala and the Grammy Awards, some invited actors, singers, and influencers have garnered attention and controversy by appearing in outfits with excessive exposure or bizarre designs at official events. Last year at the Cannes Film Festival, model Bella Hadid garnered criticism for attending the premiere of the film 'The Apprentic' in a nude-colored sheer dress from luxury brand Saint Laurent.
Meanwhile, the Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held in Cannes, France, until the 24th. This year, no South Korean feature films have been invited. However, two short films by South Korean directors have been invited, and director Hong Sang-soo has joined the jury team, becoming the sixth South Korean to do so this year.
