U.S. President Donald Trump described the first day of U.S.-China trade negotiations in Geneva, Switzerland, as a "good meeting."
On the 10th (local time), Trump noted on the social media platform Truth Social, "I had a very good meeting with China in Switzerland."
He added, "We discussed many agendas and reached substantial agreements."
Trump assessed the atmosphere of the meeting as "friendly yet constructive." In particular, he used the term "complete rerouting negotiation."
He added, "We want to see China open up (the market) to U.S. industries for the benefit of both China and the United States."
The specific contents of the agreements were not disclosed. However, given Trump’s positive assessment, there is a possibility of forming some consensus on reducing high tariffs.
The negotiation was led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Vessen and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The two countries completed the first day's agenda from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The talks are set to continue the following day.
Currently, the two countries are in the midst of a tariff war. Since Trump's inauguration, the U.S. has imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, while China has levied a 125% tariff on U.S. products.
