U.S. President Donald Trump said, "China wants to negotiate and hopes to meet," adding, "We (the United States) will meet with China at an appropriate time."
On the 6th (local time), Trump made this statement during a summit with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held at the White House.
Trump said, "Chinese vessels are turning back in the Pacific," and added, "It takes about 10 miles (approximately 17 km) for large vessels to turn around." He also claimed, "We are not trading with China at all right now. China's economy is greatly declining as trade with the United States has halted."
He noted that he just received news that global corporations are building factories in the United States to avoid tariffs and stated, "We will make a truly surprising and positive announcement in a few days."
Trump also emphasized that the United States is in a favorable position regarding tariff and trade negotiations.
He said, "We do not need to conclude an agreement. They (the opposing country) need to sign an agreement with us," and added, "We do not care about their market, but they want part of our market." He also mentioned, "People say they are very confused (due to tariffs), but that is not the case. We are flexible. We will sit down and sign some agreements."
Trump added, "India has agreed to eliminate tariffs. They will pay an expense for the privilege of buying products from the United States."
He likened the United States to a "high-end department store," saying, "Think of us as a store with products that customers want. You will come and pay, and we will offer very good prices."
