On the 6th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump said, "I will announce news that will shake up the tectonics on the 8th or 9th," adding, "This is unrelated to trade."
That day, President Trump reiterated the "big and surprising announcement" he mentioned during a meeting with Prime Minister Carney after a task force (TF) meeting related to next year's FIFA World Cup at the White House. He stated, "It will be earth-shattering news" and noted, "It will be about something other than trade."
However, President Trump explained, "It will truly be a positive development that shakes up the tectonics for America and Americans," but did not disclose specific details.
President Trump previously mentioned during a summit with Prime Minister Carney that he would make a very big announcement about a very important topic on the 8th or 9th.
Earlier, President Trump criticized former President Barack Obama's decision 11 years ago to exclude Russia from the G8 (Group of Eight) at a World Cup-related TF meeting.
President Trump remarked, "I think excluding Russia was a very foolish decision," adding, "If Russia had been in the G8, this ridiculous and murderous war wouldn't have happened."
In March 2014, the G7 leaders gathered at the nuclear security summit held in The Hague, Netherlands, to announce the "Hague Declaration," which excluded Russia from major international forums including the G8.
However, President Trump clarified that he does not see this as "a good time" for Russia to rejoin the G8.
This remark reportedly came as reporters asked President Trump about his stance on whether Russia is banned from participating in the FIFA World Cup.
