In the eastern Taiwan region of Hualien, a magnitude 4 or greater earthquake occurred 8 times over the course of about 1 hour.

According to local media in Taiwan, including China Times, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported that a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck at approximately 6:09 p.m. local time on the 5th in waters about 34.9 kilometers southeast of the Hualien County government office.

The CWA also noted that after the magnitude 5.5 earthquake, 5 consecutive earthquakes of magnitude 4 or higher occurred within 20 minutes, followed by earthquakes of magnitude 5.9 and 4.3 at 6:53 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., respectively.

According to the CWA, there is also a possibility of aftershocks of magnitude 5.5 or greater occurring again within the next 3 days.

Taiwan is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for frequent earthquakes. A magnitude 7.2 earthquake occurred in Hualien County in April, resulting in 18 deaths.
