It has been reported that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) secured the majority of the seats in the early general election in Singapore.
According to local media such as the Straits Times and foreign media on the 3rd (local time), the preliminary vote count predicted that the PAP would occupy 87 out of a total of 97 seats.
The opposition Workers' Party (WP) is expected to secure 10 seats. The WP took 10 seats in the 2020 general election, which was the highest for an opposition party, and similar results are expected this time.
The PAP, founded by the late Lee Kuan Yew, known as the 'founding father of Singapore,' has maintained an overwhelming majority in every general election since independence in 1965. The victory of the PAP in this general election was a foregone conclusion, and whether the opposition would gain seats was the key question.
This election also marks the first general election since Lawrence Wong became Prime Minister last May. The PAP decides on its prime minister through internal discussions without a primary election. If the PAP wins the general election, Wong's administration will be maintained.
The Singapore general election is legally required to be held by November of this year, but Prime Minister Wong requested an early dissolution of Parliament to secure a new momentum for governance.
