A 20-year-old Korean female student who swung a hammer during class at a university in Japan in January, injuring eight students, has been charged with assault.

According to Kyodo News on the 2nd, the Tokyo District Prosecutor's Office in Tachikawa charged a 23-year-old Korean national identified as A on the previous day. A has been under psychiatric evaluation at a hospital since February for about two months to determine the presence of criminal responsibility due to mental health issues.

A was arrested on January 10 in a classroom at Hosei University's Tama campus in Machida, Tokyo, on suspicion of hitting eight students with a blunt object. She was studying abroad at this university and was in class with other students.

A, who was arrested at the scene, told the police, "I thought the only way to stop the bullying was to hit the people in the same classroom," but no specific situation of bullying has been confirmed.
