U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met before the funeral mass of Pope Francis.
According to major foreign news outlets, including the Associated Press, the two presidents met for 15 minutes on the 26th (local time) before Pope Francis' funeral mass.
It is the first time the two presidents have met since Feb. 28, two months ago. They met at the White House then, but parted without significant results.
During the meeting, discussions likely focused on U.S. negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine war. Unlike the last meeting, there are expectations for progress.
White House Press Secretary Steven Chung noted after the meeting that the specific details of the discussion were not disclosed but said, “We had a productive discussion in a private meeting.”
President Zelensky also stated through his social media (SNS) that it was “a good meeting, and we discussed a lot,” adding, “I hope all discussed matters will bring good results.”
He also added, “If this meeting can protect the lives of our people and lead to a historic opportunity to achieve peace by ensuring a complete and unconditional ceasefire and preventing another war, it will be significant.”
In addition to the private meeting held without separate attendees, the two presidents also participated in a four-party meeting attended by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
