The U.S. stock market in New York started strong but turned to decline during the session.
On the 25th (local time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading at 39,756.1, down 0.84% from the previous trading day at 10:28 a.m. Eastern Time. The S&P 500 was down 0.39%, and the Nasdaq was down 0.08%, trading at 5,463.5 and 17,152.1, respectively.
Major indices started strong but turned to decline during the session, as uncertainties regarding tariff negotiations between the U.S. and China resurfaced.
President Trump noted in an interview with the U.S. weekly magazine "Time" on the 22nd that "Chinese President Xi Jinping called me," adding that "we are discussing a tariff agreement between the two countries."
He further emphasized the existing hardline stance by stating, "If the U.S. maintains a 50% tariff on foreign imports a year from now, that alone would be a victory."
This partially offset the market optimism following news that China exempted high tariffs of up to 125% on certain U.S. semiconductor products.
Earlier, the three major indices rose significantly for three consecutive trading days. Amid a flurry of corporate earnings reports, buying interest persisted in the context of expectations for a trade agreement.
