The Donald Trump administration is reportedly considering a plan to cut tariffs on certain Chinese imports by more than half, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 23rd.
WSJ, citing sources, reported that President Trump has not made a final decision on the tariff rates imposed on China and that discussions are ongoing regarding various options. A senior White House official noted that there is a high likelihood the tariff rate on China could be lowered to approximately 50 to 65 percent.
Some sources explained that a differentiated tariff could be considered depending on whether the tariffs on China pose a threat to national security.
Earlier, the House of Representatives' Special Committee on U.S.-China Strategic Competition proposed a plan to gradually implement tariffs of at least 100 percent on items related to U.S. strategic interests and 35 percent on items unrelated to national security.
President Trump evaluated his negotiations with China as "going well," reiterating several times the day before that he has a good relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
