A post written by a far-right U.S. lawmaker on social media (SNS) on the day Pope Francis passed away has come under scrutiny.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (50), a Republican from Georgia, wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on the 21st (local time), "Today, a significant change has occurred among the world leadership," adding, "Evil is being defeated by the hand of God."
Greene did not provide any explanation about the meaning of this post or who it was targeting. However, since the post came shortly after the news of Pope Francis' passing was announced, some interpreted it as referring to him as "evil." Notably, Greene, who identifies as a "Christian nationalist," stirred controversy in 2022 by claiming that the Catholic Church is run by Satan and is filled with criminals.
Users on X have left critical comments such as, "Greene should be ashamed of herself" and "You are the real evil."
Representative Jared Moskowitz (Democrat from Florida) criticized Greene's post by quoting it and asking, "If you’re in this world, then who is running hell?" Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger, also a Republican and aligned with Greene, wrote, "You are pure evil."
