The Shanghai Motor Show (Auto Shanghai), considered the world's largest automotive exhibition, opened on the 23rd. Amid the U.S.-China tariff war, about 1,000 brands in China are set to unveil approximately 100 new vehicles.
The 21st Shanghai Motor Show, which kicked off with a press preview on this day, will take place in a 360,000 square meter (approximately 108,900 pyeong) exhibition hall at the National Exhibition and Convention Center (NECC) in Shanghai, running until the 2nd of next month. The Shanghai Motor Show, held biannually alongside the Beijing Motor Show, is regarded as the world's largest auto show.
This year, nearly 1,000 companies from 26 countries and regions are expected to participate, marking the largest scale ever. Overseas brands including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi Group, Volvo, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan will join major Chinese brands such as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, Changan Automobile, Beijing Automobile, Guangzhou Automobile, Geely, Dongfeng, and BYD. Among the new cars to be unveiled by each brand at this event, it is reported that there will be over 100 models primarily focused on sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and electric vehicles.
Among Korean corporations, Hyundai Mobis and Samsung Electronics will promote new products in the technology and supply chain exhibition areas. Hyundai Mobis plans to set up a booth of 300 square meters (approximately 91 pyeong) to showcase eight types of advanced products, as well as two new technologies including an augmented reality head-up display (AR-HUD) and a sound demo car.
Even before the motor show opened, various companies in Shanghai held their own new car unveiling events. Hyundai Motor's Chinese joint venture, Beijing Hyundai, unveiled the market-customized electric SUV "ELEXIO" to local media the day before. The world's largest battery company, China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), also presented its second-generation sodium-ion battery "Naxtra" and its second-generation batteries "Shenxing" with enhanced charging speeds on the same day.
However, Hyundai Motor and Kia are expected to be absent for the first time since entering China in 2002, and it is reported that FAW-Volkswagen's Jetta and Dongfeng-Nissan's Venucia, as well as Lamborghini and Ferrari, will not exhibit vehicles.
