U.S. Vice President JD Vance met with the 'number two' of the Vatican during his visit to Rome, Italy.
On the 19th (local time), Bloomberg reported that Vice President Vance held a closed meeting with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Secretary of State of the Vatican, and Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Foreign Minister.
On that day, the Vatican stated in a communiqué that there was an "exchange" of views on global humanitarian issues, including immigrants, refugees, and prisoners, and noted that it was a "cordial" meeting.
The Vice President's office also issued a statement saying they discussed the crisis in the Catholic faith in the U.S., the Christian community, and President Donald Trump's commitment to restoring world peace.
However, the Vice President's office did not mention any discussions related to immigrants.
According to Bloomberg, immigration-related issues are particularly a concern for the Vatican. Previously, Pope Francis had sharply criticized President Trump's immigration policies.
Attention is focused on whether Vice President Vance will be able to meet with Pope Francis during this visit.
BBC analyzed that the main purpose of Vice President Vance's trip to Rome, which began on the 18th for three days, was to meet with the Pope, although it was not included in the official schedule.
AFP reported that neither the Vatican nor the Vice President's office mentioned the meeting schedule, but noted that the Easter Mass on the 20th could provide an opportunity.
