On the 15th (local time), CNN reported that it obtained an internal document from the State Department recommending the closure of 10 embassies and 17 consulates.

The duties of the closed embassies will be taken over by the embassies of neighboring countries.

According to CNN, the embassies that are targets for closure include ▲ Malta ▲ Luxembourg ▲ Lesotho ▲ the Republic of the Congo ▲ the Central African Republic ▲ South Sudan, among European and African countries.

Among the consulates, those in Busan, South Korea, along with ▲ 5 in France ▲ 2 in Germany ▲ 2 in Bosnia and Herzegovina ▲ 1 in the United Kingdom, were indicated.

Currently, the United States operates an embassy in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, and a consulate in Busanjin-gu, Busan. If the U.S. consulate in Busan is closed, related duties are expected to be transferred to the embassy in Seoul.

Additionally, the document reportedly contains recommendations to reduce the size of U.S. diplomatic missions in Iraq and Somalia.

This is seen as part of the Trump administration's restructuring aimed at downsizing the federal government.

However, it has not yet been confirmed whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio approved the closure of the diplomatic missions.
