On the 10th, the White House revealed that the additional tariff rate imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on China is not 125% but a total of 145%. As the U.S. narrows its tariff front to China, China has also warned of strong countermeasures, escalating the U.S.-China trade conflict to a confrontational level.
Local media such as CNBC and CNN reported that the total tariff rate imposed by the U.S. on Chinese imports is 145%, citing White House officials.
Earlier, President Trump raised the tariff rate on China, which retaliated with reciprocal tariffs, twice from the original 34%.
As a first re-retaliation, the additional tariff on China was set at 84% after increasing it by 50%, and the previous day, the second re-retaliation action raised the tariff rate to 125%. This is limited to reciprocal tariffs, and adding the 20% tariff imposed by the U.S. in two increments of 10% each on all Chinese imports due to the fentanyl (narcotic painkiller) crackdown means that the total tariff rate against China is 145%, according to the White House.
The day before, President Trump increased the reciprocal tariff on China to 125% just over 13 hours after its full implementation, while granting a 90-day grace period for reciprocal tariffs against other countries. Accordingly, only a basic tariff of 10% will be imposed on countries excluding China.
