Reports have emerged that the Japanese government is pushing a plan to distribute cash of about 500,000 won per person to all citizens.

The Asahi Shimbun reported on the 9th that the Japanese government and ruling party are considering cash payments to citizens to cope with high prices and the impact of mutual tariffs imposed by the U.S. Trump administration.

According to the newspaper, the currently being reviewed plan is to provide 50,000 yen (about 500,000 won) to all citizens, regardless of income. The funding will be secured by preparing a supplementary budget. The supplementary budget plan is expected to be passed in the National Assembly in June.

The newspaper reported that Shigeru Ishiba, the Japanese Prime Minister, views the unexpectedly high mutual tariffs from the U.S. as a "national crisis." It is said that he believes measures must be established early given the ongoing high prices. An election for the House of Councilors will be held in Japan on July 28.
