On the 8th (local time), Ursula von der Leyen, the EU Commissioner, stated in a statement released on the official website that she had a phone call with Li Qiang, the Premier of the China State Council.

She also noted, “The upcoming July EU-China summit will be a good opportunity to commemorate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.” This is the first time a senior EU official has officially mentioned the timing of the summit with China.

Commissioner von der Leyen said, “Amid extensive chaos caused by U.S. tariff impositions, the EU and China have a responsibility to support a trade system based on free, fair, and equitable competition as the world’s largest markets.”

The EU and China are expected to explore joint responses to the comprehensive tariffs imposed by the Trump administration during the summit.
