Kia will equip the domestic model of its compact electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) EV5 with Chinese CATL's nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery.
According to the industry on the 16th, Kia is preparing for the domestic launch of the EV5 equipped with the Chinese NCM battery. A Kia official noted, "We considered diversifying our battery supply chain."
Amid the launch of competing models during the electric vehicle demand lull, there is an analysis that this is a choice to enhance the price competitiveness of the EV5.
Hyundai Motor Group has previously used Chinese batteries in the Kona Electric and Niro EV. Both models are equipped with CATL NCM batteries.
The EV5 is the fifth dedicated electric vehicle introduced by Kia, following the EV6, EV9, EV3, and EV4. Kia plans to unveil specific specifications later this year.
