Chey Jae-won, vice chairman of SK Group, is reported to have his eldest son, Choi Sung-geun (34), preparing to enter Harvard Business School (MBA) after completing his experience in the North American energy business. Vice Chairman Chey is the brother of Chey Tae-won, and Chey Tae-won's son, Choi In-geun (30), also joined SK Innovation as a new employee in the E&S strategy planning team in 2020, working at Passkey before moving to the consulting firm McKinsey & Company on the 3rd.
According to business circles on the 11th, Sung-geun recently resigned from Passkey, SK Innovation E&S's North American investment corporation, and is preparing to enter Harvard for an MBA. Born in 1991, he graduated from Brown University in the United States and received a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Tsinghua University in China. In 2014, he worked as an intern at SK hynix and joined Passkey in July 2023, where he was responsible for investment and business management related to energy solution companies in the United States. Before joining Passkey, he worked as an engineer in the building energy management systems (BEMS) field for three years at the American energy solutions company Redaptive.
Passkey is a corporation established by SK Innovation E&S at the end of 2021 for the purpose of energy solution business in North America. SK Innovation E&S holds a 10% equity stake in the U.S. corporation, which is responsible for investments and business management related to electric vehicle charging and energy storage systems (ESS). Vice Chairman Chey serves as the chairman of the Passkey board and chief investment officer (CIO).
Business circles view Choi Sung-geun, as the third generation of SK, as having received a management lesson at Passkey, which is responsible for energy solutions, a future food source for SK. The fact that it is a private company, with less publicly available information than listed domestic corporations, is also noted as an advantage. A business insider speculated, "Sung-geun likely gained field experience as well as a global perspective while working at Passkey, and it's expected that he will build a global network through his MBA."
