HYUNDAI WIA announced its vision to grow into a global large-caliber artillery specialist on the 10th.
HYUNDAI WIA participated in the '2025 Defense Industry Parts and Materials Equipment Exhibition' held on that day at the Changwon Convention Center in Gyeongnam and held a separate promotional event, stating that it plans to enter the global market leveraging its experience and processing capabilities gained from producing large-caliber artillery such as the K2 tank and K9 self-propelled howitzer.
HYUNDAI WIA is the only manufacturer of artillery in the country. It has a cumulative production record of about 20,000 artillery pieces, starting with the mass production of the 4.2-inch mortar in 1977. A HYUNDAI WIA official noted, 'If we list all the artillery produced so far, it would stretch over 150 kilometers.'
HYUNDAI WIA unveiled the 120 mm caliber artillery used in the K2 tank and the 155 mm caliber artillery used in the K9 self-propelled howitzer at this equipment exhibition. It also reported that it is developing ultra-long-range artillery and next-generation tank armament technology.
Additionally, it showcased the 'lightweight 105 mm self-propelled howitzer,' which is a representative artillery system based on mobility. This artillery has a maximum range of 18 kilometers and has reduced its weight by more than half compared to other artillery of the same class, allowing it to be mounted on small tactical vehicles capable of speeds of 100 km/h. The system can also be airlifted by large helicopters.
Lee Ho-young, senior executive of HYUNDAI WIA's special business division, stated, 'We will contribute to strengthening defense capabilities and the export of Korea's defense industry.'
