LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution announced on the 25th that they will jointly participate in the 'Japan–Korea submarine communication network construction project (JAKO)' led by Microsoft (MS), Amazon Web Services (AWS), and others.
The JAKO project is a large-scale submarine communication infrastructure initiative being carried out by a consortium of global tech companies such as MS, AWS, Korea Dreamline, and Japan's Arteria Networks. It involves building a communication network over a total distance of 260 km using fiber optic cables connecting Busan and Fukuoka, with construction expected to start in 2025 and be completed in 2027.
On the same day, the two companies held a consortium agreement ceremony to share project outlines, participating corporations, and future schedules, thus formalizing their involvement in the project. LS Cable & System secured the submarine communication network project on a turnkey basis (design, procurement, construction) as the first in Korea's cable industry and will oversee the entire project, while LS Marine Solution will handle the installation of submarine cables.
Joo Wan-seop, head of the communication and industrial solution division at LS Cable & System, noted, 'This is a significant case of domestic corporations directly participating in key infrastructure projects of global cloud and communication companies,' and added, 'LS Cable & System and LS Marine Solution will strengthen global cooperation and continue to expand the submarine infrastructure market.'
