Hyundai Motor Group will cooperate with Cheongju City, North Chungcheong Province, to create a hydrogen city. They plan to significantly increase the clean hydrogen production facilities within Cheongju City and expand the hydrogen ecosystem by adding charging infrastructure.
Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 24th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the 'Hydrogen City Development Project in North Chungcheong Province' at OSCO in Cheongju. Attendees included Kim Dong-wook, vice president and head of Hyundai Motor Group's Strategic Planning Office, Kim Young-hwan, governor of North Chungcheong Province, and Lee Beom-seok, mayor of Cheongju.
This project is a large-scale initiative to transform Cheongju City into an environmentally friendly smart city based on hydrogen energy, aiming to revitalize the hydrogen ecosystem in the central inland region.
According to this agreement, Hyundai Motor Group plans to expand the scale of the clean hydrogen production facility utilizing biogas, which is currently under construction in Cheongju, to four times the original plan. This will allow for the production of 2,000 kg of clean hydrogen per day, supplying it smoothly within the region. The installation of charging infrastructure and the introduction of hydrogen mobility will also be promoted.
North Chungcheong Province and Cheongju City plan to actively support the necessary budget and various permits to facilitate the establishment of the hydrogen city. The Korea Gas Safety Corporation (KGS) will establish a hydrogen gas safety hub center for hosting hydrogen-related events and training professionals, while the Korea Gas Technology Corporation (KOGAS-Tech) will handle the overall progress and performance management of the project. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) will be responsible for the smart power infrastructure necessary for the creation of the hydrogen city.
Hyundai Motor Group said, 'Through this cooperation for the development of a hydrogen city in Cheongju City, North Chungcheong Province, we can ultimately contribute to a rapid transition to a hydrogen society by revitalizing the hydrogen economy within the region.'
