Korea University has completed the Vaccine Medicine Research Center 'Chung Mong-koo Future Medicine Hall'. It was established based on a donation of 10 billion won made by Chung Mong-koo, honorary chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Hyundai Motor on the 17th, the completion ceremony for Korea University 'Chung Mong-koo Future Medicine Hall' took place at Korea University Medical Center Medicine Science Park on the 16th. Among those present were Chung Eui-sun, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, family members of honorary chairman Chung, Kim Jae-ho, chairman of Korea Central College of Education, and Kim Dong-won, president of Korea University, as well as over 100 officials from Korea University's College of Medicine and alumni association.
The Chung Mong-koo Future Medicine Hall is a medical research center established by Korea University Medical Center, centering on the Vaccine Innovation Center, equipped with related research facilities and advanced infrastructure. It aims to establish Korea's first privately led, full-cycle vaccine development platform and play a key role in securing the country's vaccine sovereignty.
Honorary Chairman Chung donated 10 billion won from his personal funds to Korea University Medical Center in 2021 to support the development and research infrastructure of domestically produced vaccines. At that time, during the height of COVID-19, he said, 'I hope this will help a little in overcoming infectious diseases and restoring health and happiness.' Korea University Medical Center included his name in the center's name to reflect his wishes.
In his opening remarks at the completion ceremony, Chairman Chung said, 'Honorary Chairman Chung believed that the most essential value of corporations is the happiness of the people, and he spared no interest or support for nurturing medical talents and treating underprivileged groups, so that all of us can lead healthy lives.' He added, 'It is truly moving that the valuable wishes of Honorary Chairman are realized in the name 'Chung Mong-koo Future Medicine Hall.'
He added, 'I hope the Chung Mong-koo Future Medicine Hall becomes a key hub that secures Korea's vaccine sovereignty and proactively responds to global health crises.'
