LS Cable & System will collaborate with Korea Electric Power Corporation on the joint development of undersea cable management technology.
LS Cable & System signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the 13th in the LS Yongsan Tower in Yongsan District, Seoul, to combine its asset management platform with the undersea cable real-time diagnosis technology (SFL-R, SFL) developed by KEPCO and to commercialize it.
LS Cable & System has secured a cable asset management platform based on land, sea, and undersea geographic information systems (GIS) and plans to apply KEPCO's real-time diagnosis technology to it.
Amid growing concerns about intentional damage to undersea cables, it is expected that combining vessel trend monitoring and real-time diagnostic capabilities will enhance the protection capabilities for undersea cables.
Currently, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables are classified as high-risk assets due to the enormous recovery expenses and long service interruptions associated with failures. However, real-time diagnosis technology is still at an early stage of commercialization in the global market.
The two companies plan to target the HVDC undersea and high-risk, high-value cable markets and focus on market dominance based on differentiated technological capabilities. LS Cable & System intends to strengthen its order competition by securing a technological advantage in national power grid projects, such as the West Coast HVDC energy highway project.
