HD Hyundai's shipbuilding intermediate holding company, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, announced on the 10th that it has secured orders for eight 15,900 TEU container carriers from a shipping company based in Asia.
1 TEU refers to the cargo capacity of one 20-foot (ft) container. The total value of the contract secured by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering amounts to 2.4 trillion won.
The newly ordered vessels will measure 366 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and 30.3 meters in height. They will be built at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and are scheduled to be delivered sequentially by the second half of 2028.
The ships will be equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion engine powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has secured orders for 26 LNG dual-fuel container ships this year, accounting for 60% of the total.
A representative of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering noted, "As maritime eco-friendly regulations strengthen, orders for vessels with eco-friendly fuel propulsion specifications are continuing. We will lead the decarbonization of the seas based on our differentiated eco-friendly ship technology."
