As the dominance of Tesla in the global electric vehicle (EV) market faces challenges, interest is rising in the 'successors' that may follow Tesla.
The American electric vehicle media outlet Electrek recently sparked consumer interest by mentioning competitive electric vehicles that could substitute Tesla's models in an article titled 'It's time to start recommending some Tesla alternatives.'
Electrek recommended Hyundai's Ioniq 6 as an alternative to the Tesla Model 3 and Kia's 'EV6' as an alternative to the Model Y.
Hyundai has recently set new sales records for electric vehicles and is receiving rave reviews from automotive media for its new models, with the Ioniq 6 standing out. The vehicle's strengths include a maximum driving range of 338 miles (approximately 544 km, based on EPA), 350 kW fast charging capability, and aerodynamic design.
The Ioniq 6 features an 800V ultra-fast charging system that allows for charging from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes, and it is praised for its class-leading energy efficiency, quietness, luxurious interior finishes, and advanced safety features. It received the highest safety rating of 5 stars from Euro NCAP and supports various advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
Additionally, the Kia EV6 GT is gaining attention as a new alternative for drivers who enjoy the straight-line acceleration of the Tesla Model Y. It has demonstrated superior performance by outperforming some of the best internal combustion sports cars of the time, such as Lamborghini, Mercedes-AMG GT, Porsche, and Ferrari with turbochargers, during drag races at its global debut.
The EV6 is receiving praise in the North American market for its supercharger accessibility, competitive pricing, and unique design. In particular, the dual-motor-based GT trim can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, generates a maximum output of 585 horsepower (430 kW), and can travel up to 528 km (based on WLTP) on a single charge. It can achieve 80% charge in just 18 minutes with its 800V ultra-fast charging system, while its spacious interior, advanced infotainment system, and 10-year warranty are also cited as competitive advantages. The EV6 also received a top safety rating of 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests and offers a variety of safety and convenience features as standard.
In addition, Electrek recommended Lucid's Air as an alternative to the Tesla Model S, while suggesting the Volvo EX90 and Rivian R1T as alternatives for the SUV Model X and the electric pickup truck Cybertruck.
As Tesla's monopolistic position weakens, Hyundai and Kia are rapidly increasing their presence in the global market. The electric vehicles from both companies have won numerous awards at major automotive award ceremonies around the world, proving their product competitiveness and technological prowess.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has won three awards at the 2023 World Car Awards (World Car of the Year, World Electric Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year) and received prestigious accolades at various global competitions. It also earned the highest rating of 'Top Safety Pick+' from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in their crash evaluations.
The Kia EV6 has demonstrated excellent product competitiveness in the global electric vehicle market, being the first Korean brand to win 'European Car of the Year 2022' and 'North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year 2023' in the institutional sector of SUVs.
The 'Supercharger network,' once considered Tesla's core competitive advantage, is no longer a unique benefit. Recently, Tesla has opened its charging stations to competitors like Ford, Hyundai, and Kia, and infrastructure such as charging and route guidance apps is rapidly developing in North America, expanding consumer options.
An industry insider noted, 'If Tesla's brand power is not what it used to be and the monopoly structure collapses, models mentioned as alternatives to Tesla like Hyundai and Kia could reshape the market.'
