Hanwha Ocean has partnered with two Polish shipyards to collaborate on shipbuilding and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO). This is part of an effort to strengthen cooperation with Polish shipyards for the procurement of the Polish Orca submarine project.
Eo Seong-cheol, president of Hanwha Ocean's Special Vessels Division, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for shipbuilding and MRO cooperation on the opening day of the International Maritime Defense Industry Exhibition (MADEX) 2025 on the 28th at the BEXCO exhibition center in Busan with Marcin Ringbielski, president of PGZ SW, and Monika Kozakiewicz, president of Nauta shipyard.
Since March, Hanwha Ocean has been discussing cooperation measures through several practical meetings in Poland. Representatives from PGZ SW and Nauta shipyard visited Hanwha Ocean's Geoje facility a day earlier, on the 27th, to inspect the production facilities.
PGZ SW is a shipyard under the Polish state-owned defense group PGZ. Hanwha Ocean has decided to explore joint development and export cooperation for offshore patrol vessels (OPVs), surface ships, support ships, unmanned surface and underwater systems, and optimally configured submarines for overseas markets with PGZ SW. Plans are also in place to establish a collaborative foundation to enhance submarine maintenance capabilities within Poland with Nauta shipyard.
Hanwha Ocean said, 'The Polish shipyards will become strategic partners and will greatly assist in securing the Orca submarine project.'
