Chey Tae-won, chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry, met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss economic cooperation between the two countries.
According to KORCHAM on the 27th, Chairman Chey, who arrived in Japan the previous day, met with Prime Minister Ishiba at the Prime Minister's residence in Tokyo. This is the first time Chairman Chey has met with Prime Minister Ishiba since he took office in October of last year.
The meeting was arranged to discuss ways to expand economic cooperation between the two countries, marking the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Japan this year. Attendees included Chairman Chey, Park Il-jun, KORCHAM's executive vice chairman, and Lee Hyung-hee, vice chairman of the Seoul Chamber of Commerce and Industry and chairman of the SK Supex Council’s Communication Committee.
Chairman Chey noted, "In the face of difficulties due to the spread of global protectionism like the reciprocal tariff from the United States, South Korea and Japan must expand economic cooperation and work closely together," and he requested Prime Minister Ishiba for the Japanese government's attention and support for corporate activities in both countries.
Additionally, he requested Prime Minister Ishiba's interest in the APEC CEO Summit organized by KORCHAM, coinciding with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit this year, as well as the participation of leading Japanese corporations.
After his meeting with Prime Minister Ishiba, Chairman Chey visited the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry and also met with Ken Kobayashi, chairman of the Japan Chamber of Commerce. During their meeting, which took place three years after their last one in 2022, Chairman Chey and Chairman Kobayashi discussed ways to successfully hold the 14th meeting of the South Korea-Japan chamber of commerce leadership, which is set to take place in South Korea later this year.
