KLCSM, a subsidiary of the SM Group in the institutional sector of shipping, will digitize vessel operations using Starlink-based high-performance satellite communication technology.
KLCSM noted that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the satellite communication corporations KT SAT on the 15th at its headquarters in Busan for the onboard introduction of the Starlink-based multi-orbit satellite communication service. KLCSM is a company that comprehensively manages the vessels operated by SM Group's shipping institutional sector subsidiaries, including Korea Line Corporation, Korea Line LNG, SM Shipping, and Changmyung Shipping.
Starlink-based multi-orbit satellite communication is a high-performance service that optimizes the range and speed of communication by combining low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites at altitudes ranging from 500 to 2,000 km above the ground and geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellites at altitudes above 35,000 km. It allows for the fast data transmission speed of low Earth orbit satellites and the stable communication network of geostationary satellites to be utilized simultaneously.
KLCSM is promoting the digital transformation of the shipping industry. The satellite communication network to be established through this agreement will support real-time data transmission and monitoring system operations, and the overall management environment, including the stability of vessel communication and the speed of data transmission and collection, will be greatly improved, the company explained.
KLCSM disclosed plans to expand its business through partnerships with KT SAT by implementing smart ships that incorporate artificial intelligence and big data, as well as establishing infrastructure for autonomous vessels.
Kwon O-gil, CEO of KLCSM, said, "We will take the lead in establishing a smart ship environment based on next-generation satellite communication technology to secure the future competitiveness of the maritime industry."
