Doosan announced on the 13th that it will establish a new organization called the "PAI (Physical AI) Lab" in the institutional sector responsible for the group's physical AI innovation. The PAI Lab is tasked with leading the intelligence of hardware such as robots, construction machinery, and generators, pursuing technology development for physical AI innovation, collaboration with related corporations, and investments. It will also expand strategic cooperation and investment with global startups related to AI.
Physical AI refers to applying AI with human-level decision-making capability to physical hardware such as machines and robots, enabling them to perceive situations and make judgments and actions autonomously in various work environments. Unlike general AI technologies and products, physical AI, which will be applied in industrial sites, requires specialized knowledge, data, and field experience from the respective business.
Integrating physical AI into Doosan Robotics products is expected to evolve into a robot solution capable of flexibly responding to unstructured work environments based on high-level cognition, judgment, and interaction, beyond merely assisting with simple repetitive tasks.
Doosan Bobcat aims to evolve into a model of autonomous work where machines plan and execute tasks on their own through physical AI. Doosan Enerbility's generator sector expects to maximize energy production efficiency for major equipment within power plants.
The PAI Lab will also embark on identifying cutting-edge technology startups and making strategic investments with the support of integrated resources at the group level. It will focus on core areas essential for implementing physical AI, such as robotics, control, sensor fusion, and simulation, promoting technological internalization and ecosystem expansion across the group.
As part of this physical AI initiative, Doosan recently established an industry-academia partnership with Stanford University's Human-Centered AI Institute (HAI). This is aimed at establishing a network with global talent in the AI field and facilitating recruitment.
A Doosan official noted that they plan to recruit a guru-level talent from the global AI academic and industry sectors to lead the PAI Lab.
