HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will actively enter the submarine market in Central and South America, led by its own developed submarines.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries noted that it participated in the largest defense exhibition in Central and South America, 'SITDEF 2025,' held in Lima, Peru, from 24th to 27th.
At this exhibition, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries set up a 220-square-meter (㎡) exhibition hall in collaboration with LIG Nex1. The exhibition hall showcased the next-generation frigate ordered by the Peruvian Navy last April and the next-generation submarine currently being jointly developed with the Peruvian government.
A promotional seminar for the export submarine it developed was also held. The event was attended by key defense officials from both countries, including the Minister of National Defense of Peru, the Chief of Naval Operations, the policy director of the Republic of Korea Navy Headquarters, and the head of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration's mobility business division. LIG Nex1 and others participated to introduce the key systems and solutions to be installed on the submarine.
Plans to expand cooperation on vessel projects with Peru were also discussed. On 24th, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries signed a 'Memorandum of Agreement' (MOA) for joint development of submarines with the Peruvian state-owned SIMA shipyard. The core aim is to develop customized submarines based on HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' cutting-edge technology and Peru's maritime defense capabilities.
Joo Won-ho, head of special vessels at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said, 'HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is expanding its collaboration from surface vessels to submarines based on a long-term partnership with the Peruvian Navy,' and noted, 'We have completed all preparations to enter the Central and South American market from Peru.'
