LG Energy Solution announced on the 31st that it has become the first company in South Korea to obtain the KS (Korean Standard) certification issued by the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) in the 'Battery Swapping Station (BSS) electric two-wheeled vehicle exchange battery pack' sector.
With this KS certification, LG Energy Solution has become eligible for government subsidies and other benefits for battery swapping stations. The government is implementing support policies to promote the distribution and expansion of electric two-wheeled vehicles and to activate the battery subscription service market.
The KS certified items acquired by LG Energy Solution include a total of four related to ▲ electric and mechanical specifications, communication protocols, performance, stability, and durability of exchange battery packs ▲ battery swapping charging facilities.
A representative from LG Energy Solution noted, "It is true that the inefficiency caused by different products and standards among manufacturers in the battery swapping electric two-wheeled vehicle market has been cited as a chronic problem hindering market growth," adding, "By being the first domestic company to obtain national standard requirements, we can enhance our competitiveness in the standardized market being promoted by the government."
According to the Ministry of Environment's report on the 'current status of electric two-wheeled vehicles and battery swapping charging facilities,' the number of battery swapping electric two-wheeled vehicles increased more than twofold from 1,654 in 2023 to 3,429 in 2024, while the number of charging facilities nationwide reached a total of 1,872. The Ministry of Environment has stated it aims to distribute 20,000 electric two-wheeled vehicles this year, providing a total of 16 billion won in purchase subsidies and planning to support the installation of 500 charging facilities with 5 billion won.
LG Energy Solution's battery swapping service KooRoo currently has approximately 440 stations established across the country. The company stated, "In the future, we will promote nationwide expansion focusing not only on the metropolitan area but also on major cities such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju. Additionally, we plan to ensure that batteries are managed safely throughout their entire life cycle through B.around, a total battery management solution."
