Samsung SDI recently announced on the 31st that it held a shipping ceremony for the 4695 (diameter 46mm, height 95mm) battery module at its Vietnamese subsidiary. The 4695 battery cells are produced at the Cheonan plant's mother line, and after being assembled into modules at the Vietnamese subsidiary, they will supply the initial quantity to a customer in the United States for micro-mobility.
Samsung SDI's 46mm diameter battery applies high-capacity high-nickel NCA (nickel-cobalt-aluminum) cathode material and the proprietary SCN (Silicon Carbon Nanocomposite) anode material. This reduces the swelling phenomenon of the battery while increasing energy density and lifespan, as well as ensuring safety.
Additionally, Samsung SDI stated that it applied tabless technology by creating multiple tabs at the electrode ends to expand the current path, lowering internal resistance by about 90% and increasing output. The company began mass production of the 46mm diameter battery more than a year ahead of its original schedule.
The 46mm diameter battery has an energy capacity that is about six times greater than that of existing 21700 (diameter 21mm, height 70mm) cylindrical batteries. This means that it is possible to achieve the required capacity for applications with fewer batteries.
Earlier, Samsung SDI announced its plans to begin mass production of a variety of 46mm products, including the 4695 battery, 4680, 46100, and 46120, at ‘Interbattery 2025’ held earlier this month at COEX.
Samsung SDI is actively discussing 46mm battery-related projects with major electric vehicle customers. Starting with this supply, it is anticipated that there will be visible achievements in electric vehicles in the future.
According to market research firm SNE Research, the 46mm battery market is expected to expand from 155 gigawatt-hours (GWh) this year to 650 GWh by 2030, achieving an annual average growth rate of 33%.
A Samsung SDI official said, “With the mass production and initial supply of the 46mm diameter battery, our product portfolio has diversified further,” adding, “We will secure market superiority with differentiated manufacturing competitiveness and quality.”
